HOUSER, HELEN E

[br][br]Helen Esther (nee Baker) Houser of Spokane died peacefully on September 9, 2014, nine days short of her 90th birthday, after battling Alzheimer's disease for two years. Born in Richford, New York, on September 18, 1924, she graduated from Houghton College in New York State, where she met her beloved husband, Frank. They were married for 61 years and raised four children: Dave, Doug, Jackie, and Jim. The family moved to Spokane in 1959, where Frank chaired the Sociology Department at Whitworth University. As well as being a homemaker, Helen was a social worker for the states of Washington and New York. After retirement, she and Frank twice relocated to Nanjing University, China, where they jointly taught English and American culture. In addition to her four children, she is survived by nine grandsons, one granddaughter, two great-granddaughters, and her sisters, Betty Blomerley and Joyce Walker. Memorial service will be held at Whitworth Presbyterian Church on Saturday, October 4, at 1 p.m., reception to follow. The family suggests in lieu of flowers, donations to Whitworth University, Whitworth Presbyterian Church, or the Alzheimer's Association.
